Trend of Steel Structure In Sustainable/Green Building in Taiwan

In Taiwan, a restricted land and highly dense population, the majority of internal space in common commercial buildings have the property with a high population density, an over-consumption in decorating and constructing materials. As a result, on one hand, it has made wastage of raw material; on the others, it has become a new polluter inside the building. For the sake of restricting the polluter inside building, extending building life and recycling the material, the concept of ”Green Building” has been developed, and, with the certification of the corresponding standard/ criteria , to protect the health of whole residents and environmental resources is achievable.
Compared with RC structure, steel structure has the advantages as follows,
1. A less usage of concrete
2. A lower carbon dioxide emission
3. A less amount of architectural debris
4. Recyclability
5. Structure light weighting
6. Design flexibility
7. Space flexibility
8. A shorter period/schedule in construction
9. A rather stable price-trend in steel material.
Furthermore, under both the upswing of environmental consciousness and the requirement of seismic capacity for architecture from the people, the sharing ratio of steel structure in architectures is up-raising. In Taiwan, the leading role of iron and steel making industry, China Steel Corp. is to reflect this trend; the choice of the structure for his headquarter building has adopted the steel structure. And it is not only to conform to the consciousness of environmental protection, but to fulfill the concept of green building as well.
