"The vision of Industry 4.0 prominently features the “smart factory” in which
interconnected production machinery and logistics systems communicate with each
other to form an “intelligent”, self-organized unit. In a “smart” rolling mill, an order
would be processed through a chain of interlinked control systems, managing the
necessary production processes. One of those, the Roll Shop Management System
with Automation (RSMA), guides the machines that prepare the rolls for operation in
the mill. Seamlessly integrated into the production facility as a whole, the RSMA
automatically manages roll handling, roll machining and roll inspection in the roll
shop. This includes preparation of rolls for the machining process, loading and
unloading of grinding and texturing machines and initiating the grinding or texturing
process. Data is collected, analyzed, prepared and exchanged with affiliate systems.
The smart factory is a vision of the future – the automated roll shop is not. Today,
precise condition monitoring, remote diagnostics of machine defects and preventive
maintenance to maximize the service life of rolls are examples of the level of
sophistication which can be achieved in a roll shop to increase the efficiency of
production facilities."
