"Since the introduction of the first 3-roll Precision Sizing Block (PSB) in the late ‘70s the 3-roll technology underwent numerous impressive design and process innovations as far as machinery design and process features are concerned. This steady development following respective market demands and economical requirements have made Kocks the leader in SBQ market with 86 references around the world with more than 32 Mio. tons annual rolling capacity, with the fastest start-ups in the industry and the “first bar in tolerance”. The latest development stage is the new Reducing & Sizing Block RSB® generation. The paper describes the newly developed driving system for the traditional heavy-duty 3-roll stands as well as the stands with Adjustment Under Load (AUL). This is accompanied by reduced oil lubrication and hydraulic system requirements. Also, the innovative design of the electrical quick stand changing system allows a quick stand change in less than 3 minutes, the lowest known so far. The electrical Fast Remote Control (FRC) system is capable of adjusting stands and guides within a billet gap no matter how small this billet gap could be for the heavy-duty stands, or during rolling in milliseconds when using the AUL stands. An impressive process development is the Size Control System (SCS®) allowing the production of highest quality material grades rolled at different temperatures including the low temperature process. The SCS® features a real time closed loop control during rolling either with AUL stands by stand adjustment and/or by tension control of all types of stands. Outstanding operating results prove the success of the new RSB® generation."
