"Spray-Cooled™ Technology with spray cooling, a proven alternative to tubular pressurized cooling of electric arc furnace equipment, has been successfully employed in EAF steel making for more than 25 years. The spray-cooling technology was developed in the early 1980’s as a more maintenance friendly and higher productivity alternative to pressurized tubular water cooling. The first commercial roof was installed at Timken Steel in Canton, Ohio in 1986 and is still in service today. Spray-Cooled™ Technology have found installations in more than 85 furnaces worldwide in 16 different countries, including the United States, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China and Australia. Spray-Cooled™ equipment realizes the safest working environment, increased life resulting from better management of thermal stress fatigue cracking, improved maintainability resulting from welded steel plate construction repair procedures, and lower maintenance costs resulting from the reduced cost to rebuild versus alternative equipment replacement. Nowadays, there are plenty of application where spray cooled technology is replacing tubular cooling. The product line has expanded to include basically every type of water-cooled equipment in a melt shop, such as upper EAF sidewalls, EAF roofs, fourth-hole elbows, off-gas duct, drop-out chambers, CONSTEEL conveyor and connecting car hoods, spray chambers, BOF hoods and duct, AOD hoods and LMF roofs and hoods. Spray-Cooling in Electric Arc Furnaces is being used very successfully by some of the most recognized steelmakers in the world. Some of which are Nucor Steel, Severstal, ArcelorMittal, AK Steel, Gerdau, Timken, US Steel, Daido, Daehan Steel, Hyundai Steel, BHP (OneSteel, Smorgen), ProfilARBED, Badische Stahlwerke (BSW) and many others. In the smelting industry, Spary-Cooling found its application in roofs and off-gas duct installations in continuous operations since the early-mid 1990’s at Namakwa Sands, ISCOR Vaal Works, ISCOR Kumba, Richards Bay Minerals and ISCOR Heavy Metals. Spray-Cooled™ BOF hoods have been in successful operation in your Gary Works plant for over 20 years. This paper will discuss design improvements and the increased life expectancy of this patented technology together with its various application within the industry."
