"ASEAN economies, driven by urbanization, construction and infrastructure growth, have rapidly grown steel consumption over the last decade. However, in today’s world of over-capacity, price-volatility, socio-political upheaval, and competition from low cost mature producers - what strategies can the ASEAN steel industry adopt to carve out a path to sustained profitability? While policy is required as a deterrent against unfair trade practices, sustained profits can only come from (i) a product mix with an appropriate portion of value added products (ii) optimal process route selection, (iii) cost effective engineering, project management and implementation strategies, (iv) globally efficient operations for plant facilities and (v) environmentally sustainable development with an energy efficient footprint to stay ahead of regulatory risks. ASEAN steel makers and policy makers need to continually make strategic investments into upstream and downstream facilities, efficient operations and product marketing and sales channels.
