"Currently, the steel industry is in a tough situation. BSW, like each and every steelmaker around the world, faces the challenge to compete successfully in the long-term in this difficult business environment. By experience, BSW is convinced that the road to success is a wellqualified and motivated workforce. Therefore BSW stepped up efforts in its human concept and fosters a life-long learning. Besides having a sophisticated and nationwide-awarded training concept for newcomers in place, BSW strongly focuses on the continuous multi-skilling of its workforce. The aim is that each operator is able to work on different working places to keep production running and to increase flexibility in staffing working places. To be multi-skilled is also one prerequisite to climb up the hierarchical ladder: Some wellperforming operators are selected to become a supervisor. Thus, they can develop from outstanding employee to outstanding leader. The supervisor itself plays a significant role at BSW: Supervisors are the primary face of management for a majority of the workforce and have a significant impact on BSW’s performance. By leading, motivating and training newcomers as well as existing employees, they build up a pipeline of internal talent. Taking into account the exceptional role of its supervisors, BSW is carefully selecting potential supervisor candidates and trains them properly. Cause having well-qualified supervisors means having a well-trained and motivated workforce in place and thus master the challenge to survive in the steel industry – as BSW, one of the most productive mini-mills around the world."
