"At NatSteel Holdings, Singapore, cobbles had been reported during rolling of rebars from billets produced at the melt shop. On examining the billets it was found that subsurface vertical cracks were visible on the transverse macro etched specimens. These cracks had been reported to be formed due to high withdrawal pressure, insufficient secondary cooling and segregation of tramp elements. While there was no control over tramp elements due to the nature of scrap route steel making, trials were done to optimize the other two parameters. The withdrawal pressures were compared to that used at similar casters elsewhere and secondary cooling settings were arrived at after running an existing finite difference model SPRAY©. It was found that the dominant role in controlling these cracks was played by the WSU roll pressure. By optimization it, the crack and associated cobbles could be reduced substantially. "
