"In the solidification process of high carbon steel with carbon contents in the range of 0.45-1.0 mass%, wide temperature range of austenite single-phase leads to coarse grains. In addition, high carbon steels which contain carbon over 0.8% show low ductility at the temperature of 750 oC or below. Then, surface crack is caused easily by bending stresses in the straightening zone after solidification. In the twin slab casting at Wakayama No.3 slab CCM, surface cracks are generated on the narrow surfaces. We have controlled secondary cooling conditions, cooling intensity and high pressure air-blowing for the center divider side of slab to prevent the edges from becoming overcooled. As the result, surface cracks of high carbon steels, and defects of hot coils which is caused by the crack are decreased. "
