Important Material Properties of Cemented Carbide for Hot Rolling Rolls

Cemented carbide is an ultra hard composite material that combines good compressive strength to make industrial products that are stronger and last longer than conventional iron based metals. Its main characteristic is its good physical and chemical properties at room and high temperatures. Thanks to its excellent material properties, it has been widely used as a substrate for the production of metal cutting tools, wear resistant machinery parts and high temperature application parts. Cemented carbide material is composed of hard tungsten carbide phase and soft binder metal phase. The unique high hardness of tungsten carbide contributes to the product’s wear resistance, while the good ductility of the soft binder phase adds fractural resistance. The physical and chemical characteristics of cemented carbide make it an ideal material for applications used in steel mills. Carbide rolls have a longer run life and better finish quality compared to conventional iron based metal rolls for from intermediate to finish stand. Although the products made from cemented carbide materials have many great benefits, its usage is limited in the application of high torque roughing stand due to its relatively low toughness compared to steel. The physical and chemical properties of cemented carbide are very important factors to decide the performance of rolls at hot rolling steel plant. Therefore, we have investigated the important key properties of cemented carbide grades with various chemical compositions for the quality improvement of carbide roll.
