Performance of refractories in the electric arc furnace (EAF) & ladle furnace (LF) entails countless challenges for steelmakers, being the main ones the operational parameters, like thermal cycling and reaction with the slag formed on each scenario. Nowadays is possible to model the slag formation on the EAF & LF, using the right approach of mass balance and linking the results with the correct phase diagram, in order to define the proper input of MgO & CaO, for achieving the best compatibility with the surrounding refractories and attaining the optimal metallurgical needs, like removal of P & S.
