In recent years, new 60kg-grade high-performance bridge steel plate, SBHS500, was developed in China Steel Corporation (CSC). In this study, the development and the characteristics of SBHS500 steel plate were briefly reviewed. This steel is characterized by the low-carbon bainitic (LCB) microstructure and is manufactured by thermo-mechanical control process (TMCP) to satisfy the requirements of high yield strength and excellent toughness. This plate also showed no significant deterioration in mechanical properties, especially in toughness, after the line-heating process. The results of welding evaluation also indicated that preheating is not required for SBHS500 plate with thickness equal to or less than 50 mm. Nowadays, the SBHS500 steel plate produced by CSC is going to replace A709 Gr. 50 as the main materials for the new freeway bridge constructions and other infrastructures in Taiwan.
