We report the progress of technologies of reheating furnaces in Japan in order to save energy and prevent air pollution during hot rolling. 1)Nowadays, interest for environmental issues is increasing, and Japanese steel makers is challenging to reduce green house effect gases, mainly CO2, through updating reheating furnace technologies. 2)Structural steel mills, producing beams, angles, and so on, need a lot of reheating energy because of large deformation. So that there were also a lot of room to improve. We, Japanese Steel makers, introduced new equipments reduce emission of CO2. 3)Main efforts are as follows; - Optimizing of overall heat transfer coefficient - Minimizing heat loss at bloom supply to furnace - Improvement of fuel ratio at furnace Through these technical improvement, we reduce fuel consumption as well as CO2.
