Smart & Novel Improvements in Continuous Casting Add to Big Cost Cutting Benefits

In a challenging market situation where every penny counts, increasing cost effectiveness with respect to the final product cost and quality is crucial. SMS Concast (part of SMS group) has therefore developed new smart products to give our customers increased competitiveness. Among these new products for continuous casting efficiency is the patented CONSTIR-MWS (Modulated Wave Stirring). This system, developed in strict cooperation with prominent steelmakers and suitable both for rebar grades and for SBQ, has proven to give advantages in terms of quality, plus a significant reduction in the energy consumption required for stirring. Another valuable product is the patented CONSAFE mould level control system which uses thermocouples together with an advanced algorithm to determine the mould level. It measures the steel level reliably, eliminating all the administrative and operative cost related to the traditional radioactive systems. Further cost and productivity related developments include the CONDRIVE direct oscillation drive, which allows for online adjustable oscillation curves. Features like customizable oscillation curves and efficient online mould friction measurement are provided with this cost efficient electrical drive.
