Development of Thermal Spray Technology in China Steel Corporation

Thermal spray is a technology that often used to modify the substrate’s surface properties. Different coating materials can be selected in order to contribute desired surface properties, such as heat insulation, higher wearing resistance, corrosion resistance and built-up resistance. Most common products that received thermal spray treatment in the steel industry are cold mill rollers such as hearth roll, sink roll and process roll (bridle roll, loop roll and cooling roll, etc.). Since 2004, China Steel Corporation had started to develop thermal spray technology for the rollers of cold mill process in order to strengthen their surface properties and increase service life. After almost a decade, we had constructed two HVOF and one Plasma thermal spray facilities and manufactured fifty to sixty thermal sprayed rollers in-house annually. With the proper procedure and material, the service life of thermal sprayed rollers and the quality of steel plates have significant improvement. China Steel Corporation continues to develop thermal spray powders for specific rollers and different applications. In the future, this technology can be used for continuous casting mold and other part repairing.
