Mini Blast Furnace Concept for Thailand Conditions and Experimental Study on Coal Injection at IEHK, RWTH Aachen University, Germany

by Alexander Babich, Pruet Kowitwarangkul

Publisher - RWTH Aachen University, The Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering

Category - General Novel

At present, there are several projects in Thailand to establish the blast furnace (BF) ironmaking. One of them targeting the establishment of mini BF has already been started. In the scope of this study the concept of mini BF for Thailand conditions was developed. The paper firstly provides the review and analysis of the information about steel industry and BF projects in Thailand. In order to compare the large and mini BFs, statistical analysis of the correlation between BF dimensions and operation efficiency was performed. Based on the gathering information, the paper provides the development of mini BF layout, main construction elements and its operation scenarios which could be similar to the one in Thailand. It includes choice of burden and blast components. The calculation of operation parameters for several variants is conducted using a mathematical model. The experimental study on coal injection using a laboratory injection rig at IEHK, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, is included in the scope of this paper as well.
