This paper discusses operating aspects and technology improvements of the LION GROUP’s newest MIDREX plant in Banting, Malaysia. The LION GROUP’s new MIDREX Direct Reduction Plant started up in June 2008 and is rated for 1.54 million tonnes per year of HDRI/HBI. One of the more unique aspects of the LION DR Plant is that it uses hot transport vessels for transferring Hot Direct Reduced Iron (or HDRI) from the direct reduction facility to the adjacent melt shop. LION is only one of two operating Midrex facilities to utilize Hot Transport Vessels. The new MIDREX plant in Banting is a part of a new family of dual discharge facilities, capable of producing Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and HDRI. The HDRI lines incorporate a proven hot discharge and transport arrangement along with HDRI Transport Vessels designed specifically to meet the capacity and logistics requirements of LION. The HBI lines incorporate increased capacity, state-of-the-art briquette machines and slowquench cooling for optimum HBI quality. The MIDREX MEGAMOD Furnace has a 6.65 m inside diameter. The reformer is the standard proprietary MIDREX Reformer, sized appropriately for the production and quality requirements of the PLANT. Included with the gas handling train is a custom-designed heat recovery system. The Process Gas Compressors are two single stage centrifugal machines arranged in series, utilizing adjustable inlet guide vanes.
