Publisher - Universitas Indonesia Kampus UI

Category - General Novel

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the reduction behavior of the lateritic iron ore with anthracite coal under isothermal condition in the temperature range 800 0C to 1100 0C. The lateritic iron ore was the Indonesian lateritic iron ore. The main mineral content of investigated lateritic iron ore was found as the following: Goethite : 62.8%, Hematite : 18.3% and Magnetite (Fe3O4) : 6.2% and other oxide minerals like Alumina : 6.6%, Silica : 4.5% , Chromate : 3.3% and others. The ores and anthracite coal as the reducing agent were milled to -100 m and mixed and pressed to become composite. The composite material was then heated isothermally att temperatures 800, 900, 1000 and 11000C for reduction time varied from15 to 90 minutes of each reduction temperature It was found that both temperature and reduction time determine the metallization kinetics and metallization achieved. The maximum metallization value were obtained at higher temperatures and a longer reduction time. The maximum metallization was obtained at 11000C. The metallization obtained at 11000 and 10000C were significantly higher compare to metallization obtained at 9000 and 8000C. The kinetics of metallization at an isothermal temperature showed two stages relation with reduction times, two constant rates (K) were derived. This suggests that two different reduction mechanisms occur during the lateritic iron ore reduction.
