Today there are high quality and productivity demands on slab casting. Therefore there is a need to optimize meniscus flow velocity, minimize the downward flow and to ensure stable flow conditions in the mold. Consequently the use of electromagnetics in the mold is gaining greater interest. FC MEMS is a good tool for low to medium casting speeds, whereas FC Mold is the optimum tool for medium to high casting speeds. Slab Strand EMS (SEMS) is a necessary tool to improve equiaxed ratio for ferritic stainless steel and silicon steel production. For ferritic stainless steel and silicon steel casting, the ferritic structure does not undergo, or only partly undergoes, the phase transformation during solidification or rolling/heat treatment. Furthermore, the ferritic structure is very sensitive to grain growth, and the high temperature gradient leads to large columnar grains in the solidified slab. Therefore, Slab SEMS is required to increase the equiaxed zone.
