Development of an Online Blast Furnace Burden Profile Measuring System

Burden surface profile, formed by burden charging process, shows a great influence on gas permeability of the blast furnace. Better heat utilization of a blast furnace can be easily observed with uniform gas permeability, and then the advantage of an obvious improvement in both iron-making productivity and furnace campaign life will be expected. An online burden profile measuring device without gas leakage and heavy maintaining load had been expected for a long time. Thermal radiations, corrosive gas and the pressure inside an operating blast furnace reduce both the performance and life cycle on the online instruments. In the study, an application of the radar ranging technology on a compact scanning system was developed to measure the online burden profile. The innovative design in scanning system successfully scaled down the space requirement for system installation on the top cone of a blast furnace. The profiles between the different sets of burden charging sequences can be compared from the online measuring results eventually. It is concluded that the modulation in burden charging sequences to obtain reasonable burden profile with uniform gas permeability in a blast furnace will be achievable based on the development of the online burden profilometer.
