High Productivity Operation at Pohang No.3,4 Blast Furnace

There are 5 blast furnaces at Pohang Works. Number 3 and 4 blast furnaces are large and the others are small. Number 4 blast furnace relined on July third to October 8th 2010. It’s inner volume is increased from 3,795 to 5,600 cubic meters. In Pohang Works, high productivity operation is necessary condition, according to cost of molten-iron and steel making capacity. Molten-iron cost is almost hold a high position in percentage of total product cost. So we always need down of molten-iron cost. And steel making capacity is increased. Therefore the average target productivity of Pohang Blast Furnaces is 2.6 t/d/m3 . Especially target productivity of number 3 and 4 Blast Furnaces are more 2.7 t/d/m3 . At Pohang No.3 BF, high productivity operation has been performed, specially we reached at 3.01 t/d/㎥ on basis of inner vol. in Sep. 2008 and also achieved 2.78 t/d/ ㎥ for one year. Based on the high productivity technology at Pohang No.3 BF, Pohang No.4 BF achieved 2.72 t/d/㎥ after relining. We are breaking the record once again under way, the challenge is expected to achieve enough. In future, through the sustainable high productivity operation in number 3,4 Blast Furnace, we will reduce cost and supply enough molten-iron to steel making plant. And we complete the POSCO own technology through endless development of Blast Furnace technologies. We established the high productivity operation technology
