Higher DRI Quality and Higher EAF Yields with Energiron Technology

Category - General Novel

The breakthrough technology known as ENERGIRON eliminates the need for an external gas reformer. By carrying out the reforming, reduction and carburization reactions within the same pressurized shaft furnace and using the DRI as catalyst for those reactions, the resulting DRI product is highly metallized – typically 95% - and with carbon levels that typically are in the range of 3 – 5%. This carbon, in the form of iron carbide, has a significantly higher yield in the EAF since there is no furnace blow-off and with modern oxygen practices, furnace yields are considerably increased over traditional scrap or even DRI charges. This is accomplished in part due to the pressurized operation of the DR process and the quality of DRI produced. This paper discusses the overall DR plant yields and shows how use of ENERGIRON DRI in the EAF results in increased steelmaking profitability.
