A higher automation level is more than ever an important component for future innovations in bar and wire rod rolling mills. The latest development of Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG is an automation system called SCS (Size-Control-System) for the 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB) to raise the Kocks quality benchmark of finished bar products to an even higher level regarding reproducibility of closest tolerances. Based on the deviations measured for the actual rolled bar, correction values are generated either as roll pass or motor speed adjustment for every individual 3-roll stand in the RSB; thus providing adherence to closest tolerances. In combination with the 3-roll stand-AUL (Adjustable Under Load) the SCS was tested successfully in a rolling mill at production conditions. This paper will describe the Size-Control System features in conjunction with the 3-roll stands AUL and demonstrate the impressive field-test results.
