Optimization of Back-Up Roll Taper to Prevent Edge Spallings in a HSM

by Gilson Cornelio, Marcio Matos dos Santos

Publisher - Villares Rolls

Category - General Novel

Changes in type of rolled product in HSM, promoted several occurrences of Work-Roll edge spalling. The lower barrel length relative to the Back-up Roll, probably promoted stress concentration in that region, which caused the spalling. Two changes were suggested to the back-up roll dimensions, aiming to reduce barrel length, but keeping the original taper geometry. In order to check the suggested changes, some computer simulations using finite elements modeling were performed. The conditions initially suggested had shown to be inadequate by computer simulation, but with changes in the taper height, it was possible to prevent stress concentration at the work roll barrel edge. Thus, the geometry of some rolls was changed, demonstrating a complete match between the practiced and proposed model. This method has allowed overall implementation of this change, preventing the related failure.
