The reheating furnace of the wide flange mill at Kimitsu Works of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp., for nearly three decades since it was first put into operation in 1972 on a single-unit basis, contributed much toward stabilizing production and improving profits of this wide flange mill. However, with long years’ service taking a heavy toll on the furnace body, and with attendant deterioration of heat exchangers and skids/supports, and others, this reheating furnace had started to fail in its designated functions. For this obsolete reheating furnace operating on a single-unit basis, a renewal plan, designed for greater efficiency, greater economy, and enhanced profitability was revised and implemented
