Key requirements of modern drive systems in metal industry are reliable (uninterrupted) operation, high dynamic performance and harmonized platform independent of rating and application. It is important that drives perform smoothly, work effectively in a coordinated fashion, be user-friendly and be capable of seamless integration with plant automation systems. To cover the requirements from upstream Hot Rolling Mill to down stream cold rolling mills and processing lines the drive ratings should cover a very wide range of 50MW to 1kW. These applications include main drives, furnace blowers, coilers, edgers, roller tables, shears etc. The paper describes solutions to cover the above topics. The new family of drive systems, SINAMICS from Siemens, offers the common technical platform for all the drive systems covering all Global power-voltage spectrum and the applications with the same “Look and Feel” for users. Not only are the look and feel harmonized but also the engineering, and commissioning features are uniform across the whole range making the drives similar and simpler to use. The drives come with ready to use interfaces for the Totally Integrated Automation in the industry. Examples of this can be found in the Sizer and Starter software tools that facilitate engineering and commissioning of the new drive family.
