The fast moving development in process automation and computer technique has various influences to the solution provider of industrial automation systems and to the production itself. The life-cycle of operating systems and hardware compatible to these operating systems is getting shorter and shorter. This pushes the developers of industrial automation systems also to shorter product life-cycles, which has at the end a huge influence to the production using these operating systems and automation systems. Production lines are forced to start migrations and modernizations earlier as 20 years ago due to unavailability of spare parts, hotline support and incompatible new hardware. On the other hand the new operating and automation systems offer more and better diagnostic features for the maintenance staff resulting in a better preventive maintenance and a quicker fault elimination time. Siemens VAI is able to offer a wide spectrum of electrics and automation packages for upgrades and modernization of iron- and steelmaking plants as well as rolling and processing plants. Electrics, drives, basic automation, process control, technological packages, process optimization, expert systems as well as plant spanning solutions are the basis for stable production. In case of outdated electrical and automation systems a hardware replacement, a software upgrade or system exchange is a cost efficient possibility to improve production processes. Additional effects are the reduction of production costs and energy consumption, improved product quality and highest system availability. This paper gives an overview about available modernization packages and upgrades in the area of electrics and automation and outlines various system installations that have recently been performed.
