It has always been a challenging quest to find a way to determine the metallographic and mechanical properties of the finished rolled SBQ products without expensive and time consuming theoretical investigations followed by test rolling procedures. KMS which stands for KOCKS Microstructure Simulation is a semi-empirical simulation model for the calculation of temperature distribution along the mill line with resulting microstructures and mechanical properties. The calculations incorporate the particularities of the specific deformation characteristics of the KOCKS 3-roll passes. This is of importance because the majority of SBQ mills are using 3-roll Reducing and Sizing Blocks (RSB) as finishing mill with a worldwide installed annual capacity of over 30 Mio. tons. This paper describes the structure of the simulation model and includes examples of rolling temperature curves along the mill line with resulting grain sizes and microstructure relations together with the equivalent mechanical properties such as yield and tensile strength as well as hardness. Thus, it becomes possible to simulate for new or existing mills the rolling characteristics also considering respective water boxes with recovery sections for “Low Temperature Rolling” (LTR) and at the same time to define the resulting product properties. KMS is the ideal instrument to optimize overall layouts of new mills or upgrades for a particular product mix to be rolled.
