Development of a new product or process requires strong focus on the metallurgical process and operational aspects. The practice adopted for new product development in most steel plants is a combination of laboratory studies, product and process modelling, as well as laboratory and in-plant trials. Frequently, the operational aspects for the new products are developed on a trial-and-error basis which is not cost-effective. For producing a new product profitably, it is important to examine key operational aspects including capacity planning, debottlenecking and optimization of plant design and operation. Dynamic logistics simulation and process debottlenecking tools are valuable in assisting steel companies assess and then address the capital effectiveness and operational efficiency, related to new product development. This paper describes the essential elements for new product development - with emphasis on process modelling and debottlenecking. Case studies from steelmaking, casting, and metal coating are presented.
