Publisher - Kobe Steel, Ltd, Japan

Category - General Novel

Recently, the utilization of inexpensive iron sources has become important on account of the increase in the price of iron ore. Oily sludge discharged from the rolling mill is one of the inexpensive and underutilized iron sources. Kakogawa Works has begun to recycle this sludge as an ingredient of dephosphorization flux in the hot metal pretreatment process where the pulverized flux injection into torpedo cars was adopted. With an increasing amount of oily sludge recycling, the accretion growth rate surrounding the nozzle of the injection lance accelerated and operating problems became more apparent. Therefore, in this report, the mechanism for accretion growth was investigated. As a result, the threshold value of the hot metal cooling rate at which the accretion growth began was revealed by investigating the dependence of the accretion growth rate on the condition of flux injection into the hot metal. By developing the method of oily sludge recycling as a dephosphorization flux, a zero accretion growth could be achieved. The total recycled amount of oily sludge has increased in Kakogawa Works.
