Rolling of tight tolerances is indeed an interesting topic, however, not anymore the only crucial factor in most modern rod and bar mills. Besides producing a high quality product, the economy of the plant is now the most important subject in order to roll a product acceptable to the customers at the lowest possible conversion costs and with the highest flexibility of operation. Selecting the most suitable rolling machinery for the most critical area of the respective plant - the finishing mill - is an indispensable precondition to reach that target. Such rolling unit has to guarantee not only the production of high quality rods and bars but in particular it has to fulfill all the requirements to reach the highest possible yield, to roll with a maximum mill availability and to offer at the same time an unlimited production flexibility. The steady and innovative development of the 3-roll technology following the changing market demands led to the introduction of the Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB) which ideally meets all the requirements of a modern mill. This paper states the facts that make the RSB the optimal rolling unit for finish rolling of high quality bars and pre-finish rolling for wire rods. This is supported by various commissioning and operating results of projects recently executed.
