In this paper, a two-dimensional axisymmetric thermal model is employed to predict the temperature distribution over the work roll length in CSC No.2 Hot Strip Mill. The heat transfer equation is first formulated in cylindrical coordinates. An equivalent homogeneous surrounding along the work roll circumference is obtained to serve as the boundary condition. The governing equation is then solved based on an implicit finite volume method. In order to validate the accuracy of the model, the temperature distributions of work rolls predicted based on the simulation are compared to those measured in the mill. The results indicate that the proposed model can be adapted as an on-line model to predict the work roll temperature distributions with good accuracy at a speed suitable for on-line applications.
