The purpose of the approach described in this paper is to predict thermal profile on the rolls in Hot Rolling Mill. When a mill produces a thin gage-coil, it has the limit of the coil weight for production. As a coil weight increases, roll thermal which is caused by center wave, will grow up. Center wave can be adjusted appropriately and coil weight of thin gage-coil will be increased, which means we need to improve accuracy for roll thermal profile model. Previously, a numerical model was used on-line, but its accuracy was lower than the FE-based model. Even if the accuracy of FE-based model is quite good, its calculational time takes more than 10 minutes. So it can’ t be applied on-line. We have developed FE-based on-line model which is proposed for the rapid and precise prediction of the thermal profile on the work rolls in Hot Strip Rolling. In order to reduce calculational time, some parts have been changed by a numerical model. A new model shows similar results from FEM simulation in a few seconds, which is possible to make it on-line. Strip temperature model is used for calculating total heat flux and the results are verified by an analysis coupled with FEM. Some characteristics of the thermal profile on the work rolls have been found, for example, strip width effects, relations between idling time and steady-state behavior. Work roll profiles are measured to calibrate heat transfer coefficients and make optimal model. This model has to be combined with roll force profile model including wear model prediction in order to predict deformed strip profile, etc. FE-based roll thermal model will be set at the Kwang-Yang no.2 Hot Strip Mill
