For several years now the market for plates has been booming especially in Asia, driven on the one hand by Asia's economic growth in general and China's growth in particular. This growth generates demand in the form of large infrastructural projects such as bridges for railways or highways and pipelines to ensure the supply of energy. On the other hand it is driven by demand from the shipbuilding industry. Many ships have meanwhile reached an age at which they are in need of replacement. Furthermore, international regulations, for example for oil tankers, have been changed, thus accelerating the need for replacement. However, in addition to quantity, the requirements concerning the quality of plates have also changed. There is a general trend towards reducing the cost of plate applications by increasing the share of high-strength low-alloy steels. Furthermore, geometrical tolerances become tighter to ease manufacturing processes of plate applications. The challenge for SMS Demag as a complete solution provider for rolling mill equipment and especially for plate mills is to develop appropriate measures to enable mill owners to meet the above mentioned requirements. The present paper deals with such advanced technologies in plate rolling. It includes a description of their functions and shows measured results regarding their performance.
