The long product market is traditionally a highly competitive field. This requires plant equipment and process performance that ensure high productivity combined with the lowest conversion costs and a high input and final product flexibility. Within Siemens VAI, the two world leading companies in long product technologies, former Siemens VAI Fuchs and Siemens VAI Pomini, are appointed as the technical centres of competence (TCC) for the long product business. The expertise of more than 3 decades plant building by Siemens VAI Fuchs and Siemens VAI Pomini allowed the development of a new, outstanding concept for melt shops based on the ULTIMATE Electric Arc Furnace. The outstanding performance of this next generation melting tool has an impact on the plant layout, plant logistics, electrics and automation, all other process steps as well as the balance of the plant. In this context, it must be mentioned that the achieved ultra-high power input requires electric competence, which is perfectly handled by Siemens Metals. For the first time in history, investors can work with global leading companies for electric steelmaking, billet casting, rolling mill and electric power distribution on a “single source” basis, leaving no questions open throughout the complete lifecycle of the plant. This article will deal with these topics and, in addition to this, an overview of the latest plant reference will be given including some operational results achieved. These results confirm the concept which will allow steelmakers new levels of performance.
