The paper outlines a measuring technique called light section (or sheet of light) principle, which is applied in the steel industry in merchant bar, billet and section mills. Increasing competition in today’s steel market calls for better control of the rolling process. An indispensable tool to improve quality and yield of bar and section mills is inline measurement of the product dimensions. The paper gives a short introduction to the history and current applications of the technology. It will explain in detail the principles of the technology and its integration into measuring systems in merchant bar and section mills that produce rounds, squares, hexagons, angles and H, I, U and Z sections. The paper concludes summarizing the benefits of using an inline profile gauge in day-to-day operations elaborating on experience from a recent installation in a European special steel rolling mill.
