A metallically encapsulated workload space is required to achieve the best possible surface finish when annealing semi-finished products either continuously or in batch type facilities. This is also the only way of keeping process atmosphere clean while consuming the fewest resources. Both are key for best surface quality of the annealed material. The advantages of straight hydrogen can be fully exploited for annealing and cooling processes, even with material of difficult geometric dimensions. This paper presents the latest developments and performance figures from around the world. Best quality in cold rolled stainless steel strip (AISI 300, 400 und 200) is achieved by bright annealing touch-free, ideally in a vertical continuous process. Process atmosphere regeneration reduces hydrogen consumption by another 50 %. Thanks to its flexibility, the bell annealer is one of the most successful annealing facilities. The modern design with high convection of 100% hydrogen as process atmosphere enables shortest possible processing times of charges up to 6700 mm high and 160 t. Both cold and hot rolled steel strip and wire can be annealed with best mechanical properties. The prerequisites are high convection being available at high temperatures and a suitable process atmosphere such as hydrogen or nitrogen.
