One of the main issues of steel mills is thickness measurement, non-contact thickness gauge is used for this application. The gauge emits radiation on one side and the detector senses the radiation on the other side. The detector converts the amount of radiation that is proportional to voltage then the system control performs calculations. The existing Thickness Gauge was built in 1985, the control system unreliable and not too healthy when running continuously because the Central Processing Unit (CPU) often crashed. Most of the spare parts already obsolete, but the isotope source still can be use. The obsolete control system replaced with Industrial PC Based. The advantages of the new system are more reliable, more accurate, user friendly, and easy-to maintain. This new system is equipped with remote monitoring, the data logger, paperless recorder, and self-diagnostic program. This improvement already done successfully and saves investment costs significantly.
