Finish rolling of Special Bar Quality (SBQ) products on the 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB) featuring highest economy is state of the art. Best tolerances and “near net shape” bars reduce the processing costs of the downstream industry due to minimized yield losses and higher machining speeds. Another important factor in decreasing post-processing costs is the application of the so called Thermo-Mechanical Processing (TMP). This process is gaining more and more importance in SBQ rolling because it can shorten or completely eliminate downstream heat treatments with respective cost reductions. The majority of new SBQ mills is considering water cooling devices and temperature equalizing zones in the layout. To introduce TMP in existing mills due to space limitations so-called “loops” are projected and realized. The paper explains the basics of rolling at controlled temperature conditions to achieve the desired mechanical properties of the rolled products. The different methods to implement the TMP process in rolling mills will be described as well. Furthermore the fundamentals of a newly developed microstructure simulation tool, the KOCKS Microstructure Simulation (KMS) will be explained.
