Due to economic recession, the Southeast Asian region was hit hard in 2009 with Singapore experienced the deepest scar of an estimated negative growth rate. With global economic scenario continued to improve over 2010, the government of SEA countries announced stimulus packages worth US$ 102.1 billion for economic recovery. A major part of this would be spent for infrastructure development. This would drive the steel demand in this region. The construction sector itself would consume more than 60 percent of this steel demand. The steel consumption in ASEAN-6 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) in 2009 was 45 MT, as against the production of 15 Mt. Traditionally this region is a large importer of steel with rolling capacity far exceeds steelmaking capacity. With the predicted demand of steel in coming years rising faster than the capacity, there would be requirement of new capacity addition in this region. DANIELI’s Minimill and Micromill (MIDA) for long products have already proved effective for rebar production to cater regional market with low investment. Automation technologies used in these two types of mills (from raw material to finished products) are aimed at process improvement, optimization, reduced consumption of fuel and power, and production of superior quality rebars with increased productivity. This paper discusses on these automation technologies as used in recent bar mill installations (DRI ENERGIRON based minimill at Emirates Steel, Abu Dhabi and Micromill at CMC Steel, Arizona)
