Infrared heating has been proven to be an effective means of drying and curing coatings on high speed coil lines. High-intensity electric infrared ovens provide the ultimate in power and control and process flexibility. Electric infrared drying ovens readily remove water content of pretreatment coatings, including chromate, non-chrome, phosphates, resins, dry-lubes and acrylics. The enhancement of adding pressurized recirculation air to the penetrating heat provides a guaranteed dry in minimum space. Prime and finish coatings also benefit from inside-out heating. It is critical to design curing ovens accommodating solvent release in timed profiles. The type of internal oven reflector system and cooling system can dramatically affect the actual cost per ton and maintenance level of the oven installation. A new option is now available to coil coaters, which involves adding “free” incinerator hot air to the infrared oven. Analysis has shown impressive gains in oven efficiency, often justifying the cost of upgrading existing systems based on energy savings alone. Comparing oven designs quickly shows the unmatched benefit of these new infrared / hot air combination systems.
