High Performances Process for the Rolling of Advanced High-strength Steel Grades

by Konrad Krimpelstaetter, Anna Stabauer, Juergen Hofer

Publisher - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH

Category - General Novel

The aim of every rolling mill operator is to produce perfectly flat strip in combination with highest thickness performance and strip surface quality. This calls for mill equipment and automation solutions, which ensure the most efficient rolling operations and meets the market requirements in terms of strip quality, dimensional performances and expanded steel grade mix to be produced. Today the trend to use advanced high strength steel grades (AHSS), such as dual phase or TRIP steels in the automotive industries or silicon steels in electrical appliances, motivates the steel producers to invest in rolling mill equipment and automation solutions, which are able to produce these grades although the percentage of the product mix is rather small. The paper deals with key factors for a successful production of AHSS in case of a coupled pickling and tandem cold rolling mill. These key factors consist of extensive knowledge about the reduction capability of the mill (influenced for example by the roll diameter or the rollgap lubrication) and requirements to achieve the highest flatness and thickness performances. Siemens VAI’s well proven profile and flatness actuator package SmartCrown®, which can be applied in hot and cold rolling mills, will be explained. The technological characteristics of 4-high and 6-high mill stands and their suitability for cold rolling AHSS steels will be discussed in detail in the paper. Actual projects of installed cold rolling mills with a wide product mix range including AHSS will be presented.
