In all areas of industry, rational energy use is one of the key issues under discussion in addition to quality aspects. This also applies to heat treatment plants in general and bell-type annealing plants in particular. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the efficiency improvements which are now possible both within and outside the heat treatment process itself and thermal processing plants by taking examples from the heat treatment of steel strip in HPH® -bell-type annealing plants. The resulting possibilities for the improvement of energy efficiency represent significant environmental protection potential. The economic impact of energy use and savings possibilities is also considered.
