Continuous casting has gradually replaced ingot casting over the years, reaching over 95% of carbon steels and special steels world production. In continuous casting process, the tundish plays an important role in linking the ladle with the continuous casting machine. The tundish is intended to deliver the molten metal to the moulds evenly and at a designed throughput rate and temperature without causing contamination by inclusions. Flow optimizing can be achieved through the shaping of inside configuration, using flow control devices such as turbulence inhibitors, impact pads, baffle, weir, dams etc. Flow control devices in the tundish increase the melt residence time and help in reducing macro inclusions originating from air reoxidation and slag emulsification. At the same time, clusters of agglomerated alumina inclusions are reduced by flotation of these inclusions. In spite of the industrial evidence in favour of the effectiveness of the flow control devices in removing inclusions from the melt, the full removal in inclusion removal cannot be totally achieved. Calderys’s solution CALDE™TUNDISH PLUG for optimizing the steel cleanliness in the tundish and vaporizing some hydrogen removal is allowing: - An efficient system anti-vortex in case of process using stopper rod, but also working well with sliding gate flow control system - A significant increasing in the residence time - An increasing trapping of the inclusions by maximising the frequency and surface of the bubbles - But avoiding a high turbulence near the slag/metal interface that were identified as the major reason for slag entrainment - Partial removal of hydrogen and nitrogen in the tundish
