Advanced Continuous Casting Technology Boosts Productivity and Product Quality of Asian Steel Producers

High-performance continuous casting machines incorporating the latest equipment design has been decisive to Asian’s leading position today in terms of caster performance and product quality. As a key supplier of continuous casting technology, Siemens VAI has made a major contribution to the success of Asian steel producers in this field. As an example of a long-product caster, Siemens VAI supplied a beam-bank casting machine to Laiwu Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. which, at the time of the plant start up, produced the largest beam-blank cross section in the world. Furthermore, the installation of DynaGap Sof Reduction® in a bloom caster at Wuhan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. enable products to be cast which met the highest internal quality demands. In the field of slab casting, a new single-strand vertical slab caster was supplied by Siemens VAI to Baosteel’s Special Steel Branch in Shanghai. The reason for this investment was to assure fulfillment of the strictest quality demands of a broad and highly specialized product mix comprising high- and ultra-high-alloyed carbon, special and stainless steels. The nominal casting capacity is approximately 270,000 tons per year. These and other examples of Siemens VAI continuous casting projects in the Asian region are outlined in this paper.
