Presice Measurement of Hot and Cold Slabs in the Different Manufacturing and Handling Stages of Slabs

by Thomas Jansson

Publisher - LAP Laser Applications Asia Pacific Ltd, China

Category - General Novel

The basis of the paper is to describe measuring systems used to measure slabs in various stages of the slab manufacturing and slab handling process. In the last few years there has been an in increasing interest in collecting more and more information of the primary products in the steel industry. The reason behind is to find product defects or “less” suitable products in the early stages of the production of strips and plates. The paper will focus on describing in general what process parameters can be measured with a laser based in-line measuring system. A recent system installation will be used as an example of practical use for width, side profile, camber and length measuring of slabs. With the increased competition in recent years, the active use of sophisticated measuring equipment early on in the steel manufacturing process will give the producers and edge in ensure high yield and good repeatability in the production of the final strip and plate production. By having the tools to detect un-qualified slabs the operation can remove these before they move further in the manufacturing process. Saving production time not producing 2 nd grade material and even more important, avoid a situation where a wrong slab causing a sever problme in the rolling process in worst case damaging rolling equipment in the process.
