Development of Third Cooling System in the Continuous Caster

A third cooling system of continuous caster was set up in trial by installing a scales-breaking device behind the withdrawal/ straightening section at China Steel Corporation. Not only the peeling of high temperature scales was enhanced but also fine equal axis structure was observed within 4 mm depth beneath the surface, which restricted the regeneration of scales during heating process in the reheating furnace. Therefore the peeling of scales became easier during the scales-breaking processes of rolling, and the roll-in scales defect is also markedly improved. By applying this system to high silicon automobile suspended spring steel, the grinding loss of billets was lowered, production efficiency was also increased.
