With the current state of the steel industry throughout the world, producers need to continually modernize their operations to remain competitive. These modernizations must be done selectively in order to maximize the benefits. Innovation in equipment and process designs for rod and bar rolling mills make possible significant improvements in size control and mill productivity, mill utilization, operating cost and product quality. This paper presents several example of modernization innovative solutions, like flexible roughers, finishing block, pinch roll and laying head, rod outlet equipment, rail head hardening systems, billet welding, flat rolling block. Through this equipment many process improvements in rod and bar mills can been realized. Mill upgrades can be done with a phased approach to minimize downtime, minimize the effect on yearly capital expenditures thereby maximizing the return on investment, while at the same time extending the life-cycle of the original project. This paper also presents some examples of mill modernizations that have taken advantage of equipment and process innovations and examines the improvements that have resulted in production and product quality.
