Hydrothermal Treatment of Electric Arc Furnace Dust

by Bing-Sheng Yu, Yuh-Ruey Wang

Publisher - National Taipei University of Technology

Category - General Novel

The treatment and recovery of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) have been intensively studied and many of the recycling and recovery processes have been commercialized in the past decades. Most of the processes focused on the recovery of zinc oxide and the direct-reduced iron using the carbon-thermal reduction process. In this study, the alkaline leaching and purification of zinc in EAFD, and the hydrothermal treatment of product solution were conducted and the formation of recrystallized 1-D ZnO was observed. Zinc oxide has been widely used in various aspect of industrial application, especially in the form of ZnO nanorods, which hold a promising key to the world of nanotechnology. With its wide-band gap (3.37 eV), large excitonic binding energy (60 meV) and high breakdown strength, ZnO nanorods possess several advantages for use in electronic and photonic devices. In this work, ZnO nanorods were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of ZnO precipitates which were made from EAFD by using leaching and purification processes. The effects of temperature and pH value on the ZnO morphology and size were investigated.
