Quality Strip Production (QSP) via Thin Slab Casting and Rolling The Ultimate Layout and Equipment Design Concepts for Superior Coil Production

by Carlo P. Piemonte, Alessandro Pigani

Publisher - Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A., Italy

Category - General Novel

The direct rolling process for hot strip production, whereby the mill is directly connected to the thin slab caster, has rapidly gained ground because of its remarkable advantages over the conventional hot strip mills in terms of energy savings and investment cost. However, these indubitable advantages come in his first generation applications with significant limitations both in productivity and steel grades that can be produced. Since the first developments of his own concept of Thin slab casting and rolling plant, Danieli developed innovative solutions in order to overcome these limitations. The highly innovative design concept of both equipment and plant lay out have been conceived with the goals of increasing plant production volumes and available product mix, well beyond the boundaries of first generation technologies. The Quality Strip Production (QSP) technology is the Danieli’s answer for thin slab Casting and Rolling to produce hot rolled coils with superior quality and for an extremely diversified range of steel grades. Already, this approach has allowed Danieli QSP plants to: - Exceed the threshold production of 3.0 million tons per year. - Expand product mix to virtually all the steel grades used for flat product applications, including the most demanding ones such as peritectic, micro-alloyed, stainless and silicon steels. For the most sophisticated applications, such as automotive and pipe manufacturing even for arctic applications. - Extend the range of final strip thickness to ultra thin gauges.
