DANIELI - QTB Plus Technology for Quality Improvement of Rebars – Implementation Experience

by Ananya Mukhopadhyay, Luigi Martino Galasso

Publisher - Danieli Automation, Danieli Automation SpA

Category - General Novel

The post-recessional economic progress in the South-East Asian region is very likely to be driven by the government spending on infrastructure and construction. Constructional activities such as road, railway, bridge, dam, building etc. need high quality rebar with additional requirements of seismic and fire resistance for strong and durable structure. Production of such superior quality rebar within the agenda of sustainable development poses significant challenges to the producers in terms of strength, toughness, weldability, bendability, and product uniformity. DANIELI addresses this quality issue with its new Advanced ‘QTB Plus’ technology, that predicts and controls mechanical properties of Quenched & Tempered Bar (QTB) in real time in the bar mill during actual processing. Better control over properties improve quality as per requirements from customers. This technology is useful for quality assurance, process optimization, and new product development. It is based on a series of interconnected metallurgical models to predict final microstructure and properties. Use of this system also helps reduce testing of samples for customer order certification, and thereby reduce sampling and testing costs. Recently this technology has been implemented in Riva’s Bar Mill at Seville (Spain). Excellent performance is obtained in terms of predictive accuracy and reliability. The system has also been used for process optimization to reduce production cost. The present paper discusses on the implementation experience and the performance of this technology.
